Dominoes!

Learning about balance, strategy, and problem solving. We are learning about patience too, as this took us over half an hour to put together because they kept falling down for the video!

Indoor Physical Activity

http://bestclipartblog.com/clipart-pics/exercise-clip-art-6.jpg

By now, you must have noticed that I am a really big advocate for technology! Technology is super great but can have negative effects if we use it more than we should. To get children to become ACTIVE inside is just as important to be active outside. Here are some awesome links to Kids Yoga Adventures! They are tons of fun with a story focus and just the right amount of time for kids to get their bodies moving indoors. We encourage the families to exercise together to increase family time as well as get your intake of exercise for the day. Enjoy!

Past Science Inquiries

http://science.phillipmartin.info/science_human_eye.gif

In the first few weeks of school, there were many Science inquiries that occurred in the classroom (Acorns, Worms, Snails, Oak Trees, and Leaves). Here are snapshots of some of the things the class talked and learned about while Mrs. Little was in the classroom. You can read the pictures with your children and ask them open-ended questions that would provide more detail. Open-ended questions are those that don't require a yes or no answer. Here are some you may ask:

  • I just saw this picture of your class learning about acorns. Tell me where you saw acorns first.
  • What do they look like?
  • What do they feel like?

Letters and Phonics Songs

http://www.oklahomahomeschool.com/newsletters/Newsletter%20Clip%20Art/phonics.jpg

Here are some links I always use in my classroom to help children with letters and phonics (the sounds that letters make). If you have younger ones, this is a fantastic way to get them started. It's fun and the children pick up the letters, sounds, and words that begin with specific letters. In just a week, my students had started to come up with their own words that began with each letter even though the video gives only a few examples.

Reminder: Please do follow up activities to practise reading and writing letters as well as sounding out the sounds that each letter makes!

Math Songs

http://www.neoclipart.com/uploads/posts/2011-01/1295346016_music_clipart_notes-766484.gif

Songs on the computer are great for children as they are both auditory and visual. It allows for children to see and hear information at the same time and it helps build concept skills as they are given the opportunity to put two and two together. For example, if they only hear the song with numbers, they will learn them as rote and won't know what it means. With visuals, and with time and practise, they will learn one-to-one correspondence. Here are some math songs I use in my classroom daily as they are fun and very educational. You will find shapes, Numbers, Colors, and Patterns, all part of Math!

Please note that in order for our students to understand the concepts of Math, we must use manipulatives (hands on items) as well. The songs on their own will not help our children reach their goals of learning concepts; we must also provide them with hands on activities to fully build Math Skills.

Online Reading Links

There is something very special about listening to and reading stories. Reading is a very big part of our everyday lives. To help our students become confident in reading, we first need to have them become comfortable in listening to stories. Here are some links that children and families can access right on their computers. I have yet to try them on tablets or iPads but they definitely work on the computer.

Tumble Books has an online collection of e-books for children and families (focus on elementary schools). If the link asks you for username and password information, you can always access it from the Mississauga Library website.

Children have choices in parts of Clifford stories making it interactive and fun for kids.

Little Critter stories online.

Screen Actors Guild Foundation (SAG) is an online streaming video program featuring SAG members reading children’s books aloud.

A huge welcome to our class blog!

http://www.cbv.ns.ca/shipyard/welcome.gif
Welcome to Ms. Naushahi's and Mrs. Malek's class blog! Thank you all for being very supportive of the class blog idea. Here we will:

  • Share upcoming events and reminders
  • Share pictures of some of the activities we do in class
  • Provide links for websites, games, and songs that are both fun and educational

You are more than welcome to use any of the activities and resources at home with your children. Also, this blog is a fantastic way to bond as a family as you ask your children "tell me about this picture/activity". You can use the search box at the top or click on all the various tabs on the left hand side of the blog.

You can add the website URL to your saved lists so it is of easy access. We will try our very best (can't promise, though, haha) to post on the website every 2-3 days. Enjoy your stay and please share with our class community any other resources you are using and can be helpful to others! It's time to have fun!
